College Dorm Room list
So you are going off to college. How fun!
But what should you bring? Here is a list to give you some ideas.
First, make sure that your dorm allows you to bring in certain items (electric kettle, microwave, fridge, etc).Also, check that your roommate isn't already bringing shared stuff (tv, iron, phone and answering machine.)
Bedding
-Sheets-Usually dorm mattresses use "extra long twin sheets."
-Pillows.
-One down comforter with washable comforter cover.
-Consider a sleeping bag for guests.
Bathroom supplies
-Towels (2)
-Toiletry bag -to carry your stuff down the hall to your floor's bathroom.
-Shower shoes (flip flops)- to avoid catching gross foot fungus or plantar warts on your feet from dorm showers.
Storage/Organizational
-Under bed storage boxes
-Hangers
-Dresser Drawers- Check to see if your dorm provides a dresser. If not, get a lightweight dresser (plastic) that is easy to move around.
-Double hanging closet rod (to double your hanging space in your tiny dorm closet
Electronics
-Cell phone and charger.
-Alarm clock
-Extension Cords -There are usually only one or two power outlets for each room, so at least one small extension cord is a must.
-Power strip/Surge protectors -Along with extension cords, power strips are recommended because of limited outlets. TV/DVD player
-Small boom box or iPod with speakers.
-Phone and answering machine.
-Lock for your laptop (Kensington MicroSaver Notebook lock and security cable) to protect your laptop from those "new friends" down the hall."
-Western Digital 160GB 2.5-inch Passport USB Portable Hard Drive- to back up your files, photos, music.
-Printer. Paper. Ink.
-Electric Kettle (Proctor Silex K2070 1-Quart) If your dorm will allow it. You can make cup-o-soup, Easy Mac (Kraft), tea or coffee when you want it.
-Camera.
Lighting
-Desk lamp
-Candles are not allowed in any dorm room as they are an extreme fire hazard.
-Clip-on reading light can be clipped to a bed post or shelf is useful for bedtime reading or studying. This lets your roommate sleep if they want.

-Reusable/recyclable-utensils, plates and mugs
-CD case (folder) to hold all of your CDs and DVDs (Case Logic)
-Backpack

Banking & Cards you may need
Open an account in your new town. See if your school has a credit union.
-Credit card.
-Phone calling card.
-iTunes card.
Laundry
-Laundry basket or hamper.
-Laundry Detergent.
-A roll of quarters for the dorm washer and dryers.
-Iron /Ironing board
Other stuff
-Basic tool set: Screwdriver, Hammer to hang your pictures.
-Ear plugs.
-Rechargable flashlight or flashlight with rechargeable batteries.
-Nail clipper.
-Small mirror.
-Stamps, Envelopes.
-Duct tape

First Aid
If (when) you get sick, Mom can't run out to the store for you.
